GeoCell Road Base Enhancement

The ability to use native materials or any less expensive aggregates and produce the required load bearing is a major plus whenever aggregate transportation or availability are issues. Even when great aggregate is available the required quantities can be reduced so drastically (usually by 90%) that use of GeoCell merits evaluation. When rock with no “fines” is used as infill, the drainage capabilities are amazing.

On the maintenance side it is useful where grading crews refuse to retain the designed crown or drainage patterns over the years. This very common practice consistently results in water retention and breakup of the road’s structure.  GeoCell is a base. It must be covered over with a couple inches of driving surface.

When that driving surface is to remain unpaved the driving surface material should be stabilized or somehow protected from dusting off. Worldwide the loss of fines as dust is undoubtedly the biggest problem with unpaved roads.

If the driving surface material is not retained and grinding or dusting/puddling is allowed to loosen the aggregate in the top of the cell and traffic is allowed to continue the top of the cell wall will bend over and make difficult refilling that cell. The structure will not be significantly affected but careful filling and addition of additional driving surface material to protect the cell should be done immediately. With protective maintenance of the surface GeoCell has an indefinite lifespan; it is inert and unaffected by chemicals.
